We didn’t open a bar. We opened a destination.

In 2017, The Madhouse Taproom opened in the vibrant heart of Mong Kok, Kowloon. It is one of the world’s most densely packed neighbourhoods. However, it turns out to be an ideal home for Hong Kong’s most adventurous craft beer experience.

From day one, the idea was simple: bring the world’s most exciting craft beers directly to Hong Kong. Therefore, we built 20 rotating taps and poured them in perfect condition. Eight years on, that mission continues — and we are just getting started.

What makes us different

Direct importing

The Madhouse holds official Hong Kong distributor rights for some of Europe’s most celebrated craft breweries. For example, these include Amundsen (Norway), Tempest Brewing Co. (Scotland), Polly’s Brew Co. (Wales) and Verdant Brewing Co. (Cornwall). Because we cut out the middleman, fresher beer and rarer releases reach you first. As a result, most labels on our board simply aren’t available anywhere else in Hong Kong.

Genuine expertise

Every team member trains extensively in craft beer. This covers styles, history, brewing processes, flavour profiles and food pairing. Rather than pushing the most expensive option, we focus on finding the right beer for the moment. No judgement, no pretension — just great beer, explained well.

Built for community

The Madhouse centres on bringing people together over exceptional beer. The 20-tap board spans everything from approachable session beers to wild experimental brews. Moreover, it bridges local Hong Kong craft and exclusive Nordic imports. Additionally, we host regular events, tastings and tap takeovers that connect our community to the global craft beer scene.

Our story

Craft beer in Hong Kong looked very different in 2017. Although the scene existed, access to truly exciting breweries remained limited and expensive. Specifically, the boundary-pushing producers of Norway and the cult-followed hazy IPA makers of the UK were almost impossible to find locally.

Consequently, The Madhouse set out to change that. By building direct relationships with Europe’s most exciting breweries, we established ourselves as their official Hong Kong importer. Therefore, we created something genuinely new: a taproom where the beer on tap simply couldn’t be found anywhere else in the city.

We set up at G/F, 16 Yim Po Fong Street, Mong Kok. It is a cosy, modern, robustly stocked little beer joint. The bar displays 20 taps clearly above the counter, with seating for up to 40 guests. Furthermore, the vibe strikes a careful balance — welcoming enough for a first-timer, yet exciting enough to keep serious enthusiasts returning every week.

Eight years later, the results speak for themselves. Time Out Hong Kong, CRAVE Magazine, A Foodie World and Flight Network have all featured us. Additionally, we carry a 4.5-star rating on both Google and TripAdvisor. Besides that, 98% of Facebook reviewers recommend The Madhouse, based on 295 ratings. Along the way, we also launched The Madhouse Crossover — our own house label featuring Hong Kong-inspired brews like Calamansi Cider, White Peach Oolong Cider and Mango Sea Salt Gose.

None of it happened by accident. Each tap choice reflects deliberate curation. Each dish on our menu pairs thoughtfully with what’s pouring. Above all, each conversation at the bar opens a door to something the guest will remember for a long time.

Our food philosophy

Great beer deserves great food. Therefore, we take both equally seriously. The kitchen runs on one firm rule: no MSG, no chicken powder. Instead, care and quality ingredients go in, along with a genuine love of Hong Kong flavour. As a result, the menu spans Grandpa’s-recipe Chinese braised snacks, Evil Spam Fries and creative Hong Kong fusion bites. All dishes are thoughtfully designed to complement whatever is on tap. Because food and beer are a conversation, we make sure both sides say something worth hearing.
